Nostalgia is a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. When people speak wistfully of the past they typically become more optimistic and inspired about the future.

If nostalgia is random and unconscious it can be negative and we must be aware of the difference between nostalgic memories and unhealthy thoughts that actually lead to mental health issues.
Like most things in life, moderation is best when nostalgia is used to ground us and motivate us it's a useful tool but we must not let it overwhelm us and defeat us as we find ourselves in the never-ending self-assessing perfection quest.
